Snacking Self-Sabotage

Did you know that mid-late afternoon and evening snacking are where most people veer off of their otherwise healthy daily eating plan and sabotage their weight loss goals?  I typically try to keep my clients eating small balanced scheduled meals and snacks throughout the day to keep blood sugar, energy and satisfaction levels stable to prevent cravings and overeating.

Setting yourself up for success really is half the battle.  So often people are unwilling to change the very habits that cause and perpetuate their weight gain and poor health.  If we do what we have always done we will continue to get the same results that we always have.  We need to reevaluate our choices (because they really are all choices) and our goals to decide what is really important to us.  I’m willing to bet that a longer, healthier and more energetic life where you can enjoy your family and friends and do the things you want to do is going to be a lot more important to most of us than convenience foods, soft drinks and processed snacks.

Be honest with yourself: are you really “too busy” to choose fruit over a muffin, bring your own healthy lunch and snacks to works or stock your kitchen with healthy ingredients?

“Closing the kitchen” for the night at a specific time (between 7-8pm for most people), drinking herbal tea and engaging in fun evening hobbies like going for a walk with your spouse, friend or pet, crafts, reading, chatting with friends or relatives, journaling, or even just taking a long hot Epsom salt bubble bath are all great strategies to keep your mind off of boredom and emotional snacking and focused on your happiness and overall well-being instead.
