For the Love of Chocolate

Yes dark chocolate and raw cacao are actually good for you (in moderation!) Chocolate contains special types of antioxidants, one of which is called flavonol which helps protect the cardiovascular system. Flavonols help protect the blood vessels from free radical damage, lower blood pressure and help prevent the blood from getting too sticky and prone to clotting.

Of course stress management is an important factor in both heart health and overall well being and dark chocolate/ raw cacao contain a variety of compounds called alkaloids that act as precursors to the chemicals that promote feelings of happiness, love and well being within the brain. Theobromine in addition to being an aphrodisiac works to help keep blood vessels open to promote blood flow, helps eliminate retained fluid and stimulates the heart. PEA improves mood and energy and helps promote feelings of love and happiness. AEA works to boost feelings of bliss and pleasure and even has a pain relieving effect.

It is no small wonder why we love chocolate so much! Of course it is always important to enjoy everything in moderation and be aware of portion sizes. Quality is key; raw cacao or dark chocolate containing a minimum of 80% cocoa solids are your healthiest ways to enjoy chocolate.  So yes, indulge in a little quality chocolate- it’s good for you!
